Scope and Contents

The papers consist of 6.5 linear feet of archival material, dating from 1957 to 2015 but primarily between 1985 and 2010. The papers document the literary and publishing activities of Patricia Fargnoli, Poet Laureate of New Hampshire from December 2006 to March 2009. The collection is contained in 9 boxes, 6 series, and 4 subseries. Series 1 contains manuscripts and editor’s notes for Fargnoli’s publications of Then, Something (Tupelo Press, 2009), Duties of the Spirit (Tupelo Press, 2005), Small Songs of Pain (Pecan Grove Press, 2003), Necessary Light (Utah State University Press, 1999), and Winter (Hobblebrush Books, 2013). Series 2 contains correspondence, including letters to and from publishing houses, editors, associates, interviewers, and fans dating from 1985 to 2011. Folder 9 of the series is comprised of letters from Fargnoli to the poet Mary Oliver spanning 1998 to 2009. Correspondence from Governor John Lynch of New Hampshire regarding Fargnoli’s appointment as NH Poet Laureate is also included. In Series 3, there are files containing literary reviews, contracts and legal documents related to publications, and pamphlets and programs for various events. Fargnoli’s involvement in the NH Children’s Poetry Program is represented in a series of papers dating from 2006-2007 contained in Folder 8 of Box 4. Also included in the series are CDs containing some of Fargnoli’s readings and interviews, as well as published booklets and pamphlets of her writing. Series 4 contains newspaper clippings and magazines, and Series 5 contains several of Fargnoli’s notebooks. Series 6, the final in the collection, contains closed materials and those opened after 2020, including correspondence between Fargnoli and publishers.

Biographical / Historical

Patricia Fargnoli (November 16, 1937 - February 18, 2021) served as the New Hampshire Poet Laureate from December 2006 to March 2009. Her publications include Then, Something (Tupelo Press, 2009), Duties of the Spirit (Tupelo Press, 2005), Small Songs of Pain (Pecan Grove Press, 2003), Necessary Light (Utah State University, 1999), and Winter (Hobblebrush Books, 2013). She also published in literary journals such as Poetry, Ploughshares, North American Review, and Mid-American Review. Patricia was a former Associate Editor of The Worcester Review and a past recipient of a Macdowell Colony Fellowship. She won the Robert Frost Foundation Poetry Award and was nominated for five Pushcart awards. She taught or served as faculty at the Frost Place Poetry Festival, New Hampshire Institute of Art, and the Lifelong Learning Program at Keene State College. Patricia held a BA from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, and a Masters in Social Work from the University of Connecticut. She was a retired social worker and psychotherapist, and a former member of the National Association of Poetry Therapists.

Note on Microfilm

In February 2016, the manuscripts of Then, Something, Necessary Light, Duties of the Spirit, Winter, Small Songs of Pain, as well as Fargnoli's loose poems and unpublised chapbooks, were copied on preservation microfilm. These microfilm reels can be found at the Keene State College Archives & Special Collections.
