Scope and Contents

The Marie Harris Papers encompass 18 series and 25 subseries, and are housed in 24 boxes. Series I contains handwritten, typed, and printed email correspondence spanning 1961 to 2015. Series II consists of biographical materials, including that relating to her early life and family, her time as the New Hampshire Poet Laureate, as well as other awards and recognition she’s received. Series III contains drafted poetry and prose, some organized alphabetically by title and others by her published volumes. Sub-series H also contains untitled works, an unpublished young adult novel, and wedding poems. Series IV contains information relating to her publishers and publications, including correspondence and documentation of accepted and rejected work. Series V consists of material relating to anthologies she’s edited, such as correspondence, contracts, notes and reviews. Harris’s published articles are held within Series VI. Within Series VII are Harris’s journals and notebooks documenting her travels between 1967 and 2004, with her writings regarding Nicaragua being contained in Series VIII. Series IX contains material relating to The Manny Papers, a prose poem memoir by Harris about her adopted son Manny. The series includes drafted editions of the memoir, reviews and letters regarding the published book, Manny’s notes, and further research for the book. Series X consists of Harris’s planners and journals spanning 1972 to 2009, while Series XI contains notes, pamphlets, newspaper publications and CD recordings relating to Harris’s events, activities, donations and workshops. Series XII contains published anthologies, magazines, and journals in which her poetry has been published. Series XIII consists of correspondence, publications, notes regarding Harris’s speeches, conferences, political activism and role as a Poet Laureate. This includes contact with several U.S. politicians and other Poet Laureates. Series XIV is composed strictly of audio-visual materials, including that on Manny, of Harris’s readings, and voiceovers. Series XV contains material related to Harris’s narrative performance on the life of Amy Beach, including correspondence, drafts, and research. Finally, series XVI contains books, poetry and manuscripts from other writers, series XVII contains newspaper clippings spanning 1985 to 2007, and series XVIII contains photographs, prints, and correspondence relating to Charter and Marie Photography and their Christmas Project.

Biographical / Historical

Marie Harris was the New Hampshire Poet Laureate from 1999-2004. She is the author of four books of poetry: Raw Honey, Interstate, Weasel in the Turkey Pen, and the prose poem memoir Your Sun, Manny; three children's books: G is for Granite, The Girl Who Heard Colors, and Primary Numbers; and is the editor of three anthologies: Dear Winter, An Ear to the Ground, and A Gift of Tongues. In addition, her poems have appeared in many literary and poetry journals. Mrs. Harris has won multiple awards, including a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, a New Hampshire State Council on the Arts Fellowship, and a Vermont Studio Center Residency. During her time as the New Hampshire Poet Laureate, she organized the first-ever gathering of state poet laureates. Harris has also participated in arts and education programs across New Hampshire, including Poetry in the Schools and the annual music and poetry collaboration The Ripple Effect.

Abstract

The papers of Marie Harris, former poet laureate of the state of New Hampshire. Included in the collection is correspondence; biographical material; poetry and prose writing; papers related to her published works, anthologies, and other activities; clippings; and her planners and journals, including those from her world travels.

Arrangement

Records are arranged and described at the folder level. Folder numbering restarts with each series and is independent of the box number.

Note on Microfilm

In February 2016, the manuscripts of Weasel in the Turkey Pen, Herbal, Interstate, and select drafts of Your Sun, Manny, as well as Harris' loose poems, were copied on preservation microfilm. These microfilm reels can be found at the Keene State College Archives and Special Collections.
